The last Grand Slam tournament of 2023 has come to an end. The US Open, which was held at Flushing Meadows in New York, featured some exciting matches, surprising results and historic achievements.

The 2023 US Tennis Open came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday, September 10, as Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev battled it out for the men’s singles title at Flushing Meadows. The match was a rematch of the 2021 final, which Medvedev won in straight sets to deny Djokovic his 24th Grand Slam title and a calendar year Grand Slam. This time, however, Djokovic turned the tables and went flawless in 3 sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors and complete her fourth US Open triumph.

Djokovic had a relatively smooth road to the final, dropping just two sets in his previous six matches. He faced some resistance from young American Ben Shelton in the semifinals but managed to win in three sets, 6–3, 6–2, 7–6 (7–4), after saving two set points in the third set. Djokovic celebrated his win by mimicking Shelton’s signature phone gesture and slamming it down.

Medvedev, on the other hand, had a more difficult path to the final as he had to overcome two-time US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. The Spanish top seed had beaten Medvedev twice this year, in the Indian Wells final and a one-sided Wimbledon semi-final. Determined to avenge those losses, Medvedev played at a high level to win in four sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Medvedev had lost just one set before facing Alcaraz, and that was against American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald in the fourth round.

Coco Gauff wins her first Grand Slam title

The tennis sensation took the title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in an exciting final on Saturday 9 September. The American teenager won in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, becoming the youngest US Open champion since Serena Williams in 1999, as well as the youngest Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.

In the wheelchair singles final there was an all-British showdown between Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid. Hewett was the defending champion and the top seed, while Reid was the second seed and previous winner in 2015. Hewett proved too strong for his compatriot, winning 6-4, 6-3. It was Hewett’s fourth Grand Slam singles title and his second at the US Open. He also became the first male wheelchair player to defend his US Open title since Shingo Kunieda in 2010.
