Cortés wasn´t the last person to visit Mexico. According to the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, 32.1 foreign visitors paid Mexico a visit in 2016. And that record high number made Mexico the 9th most visited country in the world. The explanation? Well, maybe it had something to do with the string of stunning beaches that line the Mexican Gulf near Cancun in the east. Or maybe it´s the spicy Burritos, Taquitos and Quesadillas, just some of the favourite Mexican dishes that have established themselves as an integral part of Californian cuisine, their neighbour to the north. Maybe it´s the tequila in Guadalajara, the Mayan Pyramids in Yucatán or the country´s enormous capital, Mexico City with all it has to offer… Ready for a little Spanish?
The Olmecs were the earliest known major civilisation on the American continent. The archaeological finds proving that proved that they existed approximately 3,500 years ago, were mainly found in the area of what is now the southern Mexican state of Veracruz. After the Olmecs, came the Mayans and Aztecs, wealthy and powerful empires that flourished at the end of the 15th century, until the Spanish army of Hernándo Cortés arrived on the North American continent and ushered in the long period of Spanish rule. It was only after 11 years of civil war that the Mexicans finally gained their independence from Spain in 1810.
Mexico´s history stretches far back in time, and while USA, their big brother to the north, may seem a safer choice of destination at times, there is no doubt that this beautiful, Spanish-speaking country has something very special to offer thanks to its rich history, beautiful scenery and, not least of all, its warm and hospitable people. With the notorious drug baron, ”El Chapo” now safely behind bars, things are looking up. All that´s left to say is: ”Welcome to Mexico and viva la tequila!”
