Thailand is a favorite Asian destination of Europeans, and it´s no wonder. The number of direct flights to Thailand these days from many points in Europe has made far more accessible, and it is now possible to get there in around 12-13 hours from many capitals in Europe, and around 18-20 hours from points in North America, although a stopover from here may be required.
But why are so many travellers crazy about Thailand in particular? What makes it so special? Many have an image in their minds of what Thailand represents – everything from fantastic scenery, exotic food and colourful festivals, to fabulous beaches and gracious people, and they are right! Thailand has all this… and more. It truly is a destination that has something for everyone. Backpackers, adrenalin junkies, divers and your average charter tourist – everyone flocks to all corners of this beautiful country – for whatever you are looking for, you´ll find it here.
The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is a microcosm of what Thailand has to offer as a whole, with everything from soaring skyscrapers to temples too numerous to count, tucked away amongst the hustle and bustle of the city´s hectic daily life, where more than 8 million inhabitants provide the backdrop to the amazing experiences you are about to have in this city that never stops.
To the north is Chiang Mai, a cultural pearl, with its wild areas of natural beauty and beautiful temples just waiting to be explored, not to mention its Thai cuisine – which can also be a little on the wild side at times! This area is famous for its lovely, natural surroundings and wildlife where it is possible to see tigers and elephants up close! Chiang Mai is also the area in which the Karen Long Neck Tribe has their villages, where you can visit them and see the co-called “giraffe-women” with their elongated necks decorated with brass jewellery, and learn about their way of life first-hand, one of the most unique experiences you will ever have.
Further south, you can chill out in the sublime, turquoise waters around the dazzling white beaches of Thailand that are the perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. You can indulge the senses in the luxurious surroundings of the larger, exclusive resorts in popular areas such Phuket, or strike out on your own and explore further afield to find your own private corner of paradise. No matter where you are, you can always get to somewhere else! The most popular destinations are all linked by a network of airports that make it easy to visit any of the larger cities on the island. If you want to spend less on transportation, you can also save money by taking advantage of the good bus network that links most destinations in Thailand. For the really adventurous, a popular solution is to buy or rent a motorbike!
