National Golf Club in Belek, Turkey
National Golf Club is a classic and first-rate golf course, you really should play on the Turkish golf coast. If you want to test the level of golf in Turkey, this is the Championship Course to play. Although it was the Belek region’s first course, it was a hit right from its opening in 1994, also internationally. They got it pretty close to right the first time. This was probably due to the need for quality golf courses in general in Turkey, where nature and climate begged for superior golf courses, but also because it was designed by a Ryder Cup player, Irishman David Feherty, who used in his layout the best ideas from the best courses he himself had played professional tournament golf on for many years. Now 26 years later, it is as good as a golf course gets, give and take. This is prime golf.
National Golf Club has a perfect position between the Taurus mountains and the Mediterranean
This meant that no 2 holes came to look like each other. Literally, National is carved into a dense forest of eucalyptus and pine trees at the foot of the high snow-capped Taurus Mountains, forming an incredibly beautiful backdrop inland. Some fairways feel like narrow avenues, while others “only” have trees on one side, but in return water on the other. Some compare the National in terms of layout with Valderrama in Spain, because the variation from hole to hole means that all the iron and clubs in the back come into use during the round.
A nine-hole course, the Executive Course, with par 29 is the perfect warm-up for a round at National Golf Club. Not too long, not too easy or difficult. You don´t need to be an executive to play it, but you must promise to enjoy the rather superior 9 hole golf course. Play it twice and you may lower your handicap.
Golf breaks in Turkey
A big advantage of playing golf is that you can play several different courses on your golf holiday in Turkey without having to move quite a few kilometers or meters from course to course or from hotel to course. Just stay near Belek and you’ll have one of the most efficient and fine golf vacations in the world.
Compared to most other golf nations, Turkey is relatively new to the course. The Turkish Golf Federation as an example is from 1996. And the first courses are not much older. There were big plans before the financial bubble in 2007 to build 100 courses in a short time, but to date, the immediate ambition has become somewhat smaller. On the other hand, the golf experience as such is top-notch.
