Crete, the largest of the Greek islands

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean, is 318 kilometers south of the port of Athens and is the birthplace of Zeus. Crete has ancient ruins, snowy peaks, and abundant beaches. Crete enjoys the longest summer not only in Greece but also in Europe, but spring is especially lovely for wandering and sightseeing.
Crete is known for its many beaches, and especially for the pink sandy beach of Elafonissi and the magnificent Balos lagoon.
Crete is the Greek island of superlatives. Here you will find the largest mountain. Crete is also the birthplace of the oldest and strangest myths in Greece, and the home of the Minoans of the Bronze Age. It is also the first literate and ineffably artistic civilization in Europe.
Crete has centuries after centuries of rich history, as well as a fiercely independent spirit. Residents will often refer to themselves as Cretans instead of Greeks.
Crete’s ancient archeological sites, centuries-old port cities and beaches attract visitors from around the world.

Crete Attractions

Knossos palace
A maze of massive columns and delightful frescoes, the Knossos Palace is a testament to the sophistication of the Minoan civilization that disappeared sometime in the fourteenth century. According to legend, it was also the home of the mythical Minotaur of King Minos.
Located about five kilometers (3.1 miles) from Iraklion, Knossos is considered the oldest city in Europe. The palace had more than 1,200 rooms, some of them rebuilt to portray the greatness of the site. This monumental residential complex focuses on a vast courtyard, where it seems that they organized “Bull-Leaping”, an activity that involved running towards a bull, grabbing it by the horns and taking a somersault over it.
An earthquake destroyed the first palace, built around 2000 a. C., in 1700 a. C.

Elafonissi
Located in the southwest corner of Crete, Elafonissi beach shines with pink sand and crystal clear Mediterranean waters. Elafonisi is an oblong peninsula, which is often broken in two parts by water, giving the impression of being a separate island.
If you feel adventurous, you can cross the shallow lagoon of Elafonissi towards a small uninhabited island, home to a historic lighthouse, a chapel and more than 100 species of native plants. Recent travelers praise Elafonissi as one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, if not throughout Greece.
Exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise water are formed on both sides of the peninsula, reminiscent of the Caribbean. The sand is pink in many places, taking its color from millions of crushed shells. Near the breaking point of the peninsula, sea water does not exceed 1 m deep, creating a small lagoon, ideal for children. You can easily cross the lagoon to reach the opposite place of the peninsula, while you take your staff with you, because the water is very shallow.
The beaches of this island are very popular among locals and visitors, so it can be a bit crowded in some areas. Travelers who want to avoid the crowds can walk a little further inside, where they will find many nice and quiet places.

Balos laguna, Greece

Balos Lagoon
The famous Balos Lagoon is approximately 56 km northwest of Chania and 17 km northwest of Kissamos, formed between Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani and below the Platiskinos range. Balos is unquestionably the foremost photographed beach in Crete.
Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, wild natural beauty and beautiful exotic landscapes. During the summer, Balos is visited by thousands of people, who arrive mainly by the ferries that leave the port of Kissamos. Also, it is a great idea is to arrive in Balos in the morning before the ships arrive from Kissamos. These few hours of remoteness in such a heavenly place will remain engraved in your memory forever.
If you don’t like crowds, you better avoid visiting the beach in July and August.
Balos Lagoon has white sand and exotic white, intense blue and turquoise waters. The sea is quite shallow and warm which makes it ideal for young children.

Arkadi Monastery
The Arkadi monastery is something that Crete can do for anyone interested in religious history. Occupying a special place in the hearts of many locals, it is said that the monastery was founded in the 5th century by a powerful Byzantine emperor.
Located near Rethymnon and built-in 1587, the Arkadi Monastery houses one of the best Venetian churches on the island.
In the 19th century, the monastery was one of the most prosperous on the island and served as an important center of resistance against the Ottomans. Many locals locked themselves inside the monastery to resist the Ottoman forces, before setting the building on fire.

Vai Beach
Also known as Palm Beach, it is known primarily for its stunning landscape. The beach is home to one of the largest palm grove in Europe with 4,500 palm trees that have been there for more than 2,000 years. So, if you are looking to avoid renting a beach umbrella, you have come to the right place to get some natural shade. The sand can be filled with buses full of tourists, but a short walk on a hill on the south side of Vai Beach will reveal an underutilized stretch of coastline, but no less beautiful.
Recent visitors praised Vai Beach for its cleanliness and beautiful views not only from the beach but from the top of the nearby hills. Travelers also praised the scenic drive to the beach.
According to legend, palm trees grew from date stones dragged ashore from Saracen ships in the ninth century.

Sailing Greece – Mykonos to Santorini breathtaking excursion

Santorini Attractions.

Oia
Oia is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic areas of the island with its unique architecture and white buildings. Simply walking through the town will give you an idea of the past as you walk the winding narrow streets and experience views, sounds and aromas of Greek culture.
When you see photos of this beautiful archipelago, most of the time they are taken in Oia. There are many beautiful places here, but none as photogenic as this. The town of Oia is very popular with visitors to the island and may seem quite congested throughout the day, but if you can survive the crowds, the sunset will make everything worthwhile. When the sun sets at night, the town is washed with a magnificent glow.
For an even richer experience, you can take a night sailing tour to see the sunset reflected in the white buildings of Oia. Those moments will leave you breathless when you see Oia on fire with bright colors of the sunset reflecting in the deep and dark Aegean Sea.

Kamari Beach on the charming Santorini
The largest and most popular beach in Santorini, Kamari is located along the seashore of the town of the same name. The town and the beach are named after the small arch or “kamara” embedded in the cliffs at the southern end of the beach, the remains of a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon. Notable for its coastline of black sand and pebbles, Kamari is the most developed beach on the island, and is full of hotels, bars and nightclubs. In addition to sunbathing and people watching, snorkeling and diving are popular activities.
Remote Red Beach And White Beach
Two beaches that should be at the top of the list for any visit to Santorini are Red Beach and White Beach. They have an appropriate name, each full of its own vibrant color. It is not easy to access these beaches, so getting there may require a little more planning on your part. The red sand and the high red cliffs create a beautiful contrast of color with a clear blue sky and crystal clear waters. White Beach is dotted with perfect black and white pebbles of different sizes and the bright cliffs offer excellent photo opportunities.

Santorini Wine Tour
Wine Tours are among the most popular activities in Santorini. The island is famous for its excellent white wines, known as some of the best in Greece.
You can visit many vineyards known to be some of the oldest in the world! on the island, and taste the best wines.
Santorini is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world.

Therasia (tyrasia)
The island of Therasia is an ideal destination for visitors who wish to enjoy the sunny atmosphere of Santorini, less crowds. The largest of the five small towns, also called Therasia, has only about 150 inhabitants. You can reach the side of the caldera by a long flight of stairs that climb the cliff. The smallest island has the same picturesque architecture as Santorini, and the population shares the same traditions and customs. Whether you enjoy it as a day trip or a weekend getaway, Therasia offers visitors an authentic Greek experience on the island.

Akrotiri
Going through the ruins of Akrotiri will really give you an idea of what the island was like at the height of the Minoan civilization. That is before the volcano erupted and covered everything in multiple layers of ash. A careful excavation has discovered some quite surprising elements so far and taking time to appreciate the lost islanders and what happened is quite humiliating.
Archaeological excavations are still ongoing in this very large site. There are probably still many remains to be discovered!

Akrotiri Lighthouse
The Akrotiri lighthouse is located on the southern peninsula of the island of Santorini. The lighthouse itself is not as attractive as the views from it. This is another beautiful place to bring a bottle of wine and enjoy a perfect sunset.

Thera Prehistoric Museum
Located in the capital city of Fira, Thera Museum of Prehistory is one of the most important cultural attractions of Santorini. Opened in 2000, the museum presents treasures unearthed in the excavation of Akrotiri, including an extensive collection of colorful frescoes. A representation of women picking saffron from saffron flowers offers insight into the daily life of the first inhabitants of the island. While the swallows’ frescoes are easy to understand, since the swallows still perch on the caldera cliffs, a representation of blue monkeys has baffled scholars. Historians have found no evidence that monkeys have lived in Santorini.

Pyrgos
Once the capital of Santorini, the inner city of Pyrgos is located on the top of a hill that offers stunning views of the island from all directions. The remains of a Venetian castle perch on the top of the hill. Within the castle walls there is a church that is believed to have been built in the 10th century. Relatively unspoiled by tourism, Pyrgos presents some of the best examples of medieval architecture on the island. The town is surrounded by wineries, many of which offer tours and tastings. Dessert wine known as vinsanto produced here is considered one of the best in Greece.

Vouno table
Mesa Vouno is so big that it’s hard to miss it. This giant rock formation is located between Perissa and Kamari, so if you visit any of those beaches, be sure to take some photos. If you think Mesa Vouno is impressive during the day, wait until you see it when the sun sets. Thanks to the mineral deposits in the rock, it actually seems to glow and glow a little in the moonlight.
The land itself is definitely something to contemplate, but the real point of interest is at the top of Mesa Vouno: ruins of an ancient city called Thira. If you can handle the walk. It takes a relatively fit person about an hour to reach the top, only the views will be worth it. On top, admire the views of the ruins and imagine how it was so many years ago. Contemplate the open sea and feel the breeze of the surrounding Aegean Sea.

Milos, Remember Venus de Milo? Greek Islands

The ancient Greek sculpture of Aphrodite, Venus de Milo, currently on permanent display at the Louvre in Paris, may be the island’s most famous export, but Milos is an impressive island of colors due to its volcanic origins. The color of the Aegean Sea around this island of the Cyclades varies from cobalt blue to emerald green and the rocks go from pink to red to violet. It has a complete cover of natural and man-made surprises. It is perforated with white fjords, sulfur yellow striped cliffs and black obsidian rocks.
The unique geology has endowed the island with a large number of beautiful beaches of over 70, and the glorious hot springs along the coast cannot be lost.
Milos has the most diverse and dramatic coast of all the Greek islands.
The island of Milos has some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece. It also has some amazing places to swim that aren’t really beaches. The lava flow has created a coast that is multifaceted and in many places quite dramatic with strange rock formations that seem to be from another planet. Many of these rock formations are excellent places to swim.

Milos Attraction

Sarakiniko
The beautiful white beach of Sarakiniko is situated in north Milos. It is not a large beach and due to its natural beauty and good accessibility, it can be quite busy with swimmers at peak season. The beach is squeezed between beautiful, almost polished white rocks and cliffs probably derived from calcium minerals. As you watch the sea, you’ll want to walk around these milky rocks on the right side of the beach, which form some sort of small labyrinth, giving you a special feeling of walking on the moon.
You can explore a few tunnels carved into the cliff on the beach’s left-hand side. A few meters out into the sea, you’ll also find a rock about five meters high from where you can dive into the sea if you fancy. The water close to the beach is fairly shallow until you reach the bay entrance.

Boat Tour Around Milos Island
A visit to Milos Island is incomplete unless you do a boat tour of the island. It gives you the opportunity to swim in places that are only accessible by boat, and to see the island from another angle. A great many tours are available. All of the boat tours in Milos depart from Adamas village, they take you across Milos shoreline making stops along the way. The Kleftiko is the highlight of the trip. There you can swim around the tiny caves and see the strange rock formations. This tour will take you to many attractions around Milos.
Milos Ecclesiastical Museum
The Milos Ecclesiastical Museum is housed in the Holy Trinity Church, close to the village of Adamas waterfront. This museum is small but contains many important ecclesiastical items.
These items date from the Venetian period until today. You will see rare Byzantine icons in the museum, woodcarvings for Venetian-built churches, golden votive offerings from Greeks who migrated abroad, bishop seats, silver chalices and others.
The Holy Trinity Church was built in a very rare architectural form during the 17th century. It was under many renovations through the ages. You can see a mosaic relief which impressive scenes of the Bible in the yard of this lovely church.

The Catacombs Of Milos
Milos is home to Greece’s largest catacombs. Discovered in 1840, and located near Plaka, these catacombs were built to serve as a Christian cemetery in the 1st century AD. The corridors are 184 meters long and are 2-2.5 meters high.
About 2,000 Christians are estimated to have been buried in the Catacombs until the 5th century AD when they were closed due to landslides.
The Milos Catacombs, after the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and the catacombs in Rome, are the third most important Christian monument of their type.

The Kleftiko
Kleftiko is Milos island’s most iconic and popular beach. The only way to get to the beach at Kleftiko is by boat. It’s known that Kleftiko was the hideout of the old pirates, where they would stash their stolen treasures. The only way to get to Kleftiko is by boat, but there are many daily boat tours that depart for tourists from Adamas harbor. With its huge white volcanic rocks, Kleftiko offers you the opportunity to swim in crystal-clear, turquoise waters surrounded by impressive and unique scenery!
Milos ‘ organized boat tours usually give you goggles, snorkels, and flippers so you can take advantage of the beautiful seabed.

Ancient Milos Theater
No more than 200 meters from the Catacombs is a theater with grades of pristine Parian marble seats facing the west side of the natural harbor and the dark outline of the hills. The location itself is reason enough to come. The theater belonging to the ancient town of Klima was first built in Hellenistic times in the 3rd century BC and had to be reconstructed after the city was destroyed in Roman times by the Athenians.
The theater is hewn from the hill, and a monument that once could seat 7,000 spectators (compared to 700 today) has been excavated for up to eight levels. Don’t forget to check the acoustics, and consider the faint vestiges of the surrounding walls and towers of ancient Klima.

Sunset in Plaka
Plaka is the main city of the island and capital of Milos. It sits on a large rock where cars cannot enter. Almost anywhere in the city offers incomparable views over the Gulf of Milos, which makes it another perfect place to come and see a Greek sunset.
Most of Plaka has traditional Cycladic architecture with whitewashed buildings and blue roofs. It is another small town where anyone can come and do some boutique shopping, enjoy a Greek meal or enjoy a sunset while the sun sets. There is also a Folk Museum, an archeological museum and a couple of idyllic churches.
To access Plaka, you will have to park under the city and walk 5 to 10 minutes to the city, since cars cannot enter these narrow streets.
It is worth noting that the city of Plaka has a slightly more exclusive feeling after sunsets. If there were a modern area of Milos, Plaka would be that area. I showed up here at sunset one night in beachwear (see photo above) and I definitely felt naked among others who were clearly more dressed for the night.

Pollonia Beach
Pollonia is a friendly and quiet sandy beach. He is in love with the shade trees that overlook the Kimilos Islands.
The area also has numerous excellent restaurants that serve excellent refreshments to visitors and locals alike.

Today, part of these historic houses have been transformed into a different type of cozy restaurants, trendy bars, shops and nightclubs, which makes this a bustling place at all hours of the day.
You can pass through the windmills to take pictures, since the two tourist points of interest are within walking distance of each other.
Delos day trip
This small island is not only picturesque, but also plays a vital role in Greek history and mythology. Delos is the “Delphi” of the Cyclades Islands and was an important religious place in ancient Greece. On the island wrapped in bushes, there is a large palm tree that marks the only fresh water on the island. Also, this is where Titan Leto gave birth to Apollo.
The island of Delos is just a few kilometers from the southwest coast of Mykonos and its excavations have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
If you live up to Greek Olympic mythology, you will know that Delos is the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis.
But more than a thousand years before, the island was already a revered sacred sanctuary.
There is much to discover, such as the terrace of the lions of the seventh century BC. C., the Doric temple of the delianos, the Minoan fountain, a series of market places and the theater district, decorated with splendid mosaics.
You can also see phenomenal Hellenistic mosaics in the House of Dionysus, the House of Masks, the House of the Trident, the House of the Lake and the House of the Dolphins.

Platys Gialos Beach
Platys Gialos Beach is located on the southwest coast of the island of Mykonos. The beach is one of the most popular beaches in Greece and Mykonos, with stretches of a mile of perfectly golden sand and waves of light blue. The area around Platys Gialos is very urbanized, making it a popular tourist place, full of hotels, bars and restaurants that line the coast.
Agios Stefanos Beach
Located just north of Troulos, in the southern part of the island, about 4 km (2.48 miles) from the city of Mykonos, this small beach resort is quite quiet most of the season, unlike the most popular beaches in the south. The protected cove creates calm and turquoise waters, and there are some small beach cafes and restaurants to quench any appetite. This is an ideal escape for those who do not seek to go far. Platis Gialos Beach can be accessed by bus and by boat.

Windmills
These Windmills are considered as one of the famous monuments of the Cyclades Islands. In Mykonos, they are a landmark of the landscape as they rise above the sea, on the small hill southeast of Chora.
They have a characteristic spherical shape, snow white color and pointed wooden roof, ideal for the quite extreme winds of Mykonos. Its original use was for the grinding of grains that contributed to the economic development of the island.
Today, windmills are no longer operational, but they are still a symbol of Mykonos and a jewel of the island. Today, there are 7 windmills in Mykonos that are kept in very good condition due to extensive renovation. The most famous of all is the “Bonis Windmil” (Mykonos Agromuseum), which has been transformed into a museum where various activities are carried out.
Kato Mili
One of the best places to visit in Mykonos is Kato Mili or the “lowest windmills” in Greek. First built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the row of historic windmills covered with wood and straw that face the sea in the city of Chora, currently has 16 windmills in Mykonos, of which 7 are in the famous monument of Chora. Hill. You have to visit the windmills to learn how the Venetians took advantage of the power of the wind and enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the ocean.

Panagia Paraportiani
Panagia Paraportiani is considered one of the best places to visit in Mykonos. One of the historical religious sites in Mykonos, Panagia Paraportiani is located along the bright coastline at the entrance of the Kastro district of Chora. While the whitewashed walls of this church by the sea form a unique shape due to the unusual construction of the building, you can see five small churches that were built one above the other during the fourteenth century. The asymmetrical shape and the rare combination of architectural styles combined with the ocean view have helped make this religious site one of the most photographed sites in the world.
The Mykonos Folklore Museum
The island’s Folklore Museum is located in Kastro, just a few minutes from the famous Paraportiani, in a traditional two-story building. It houses interesting collections of classic furniture, handmade ceramics, Byzantine paintings, as well as important manuscripts and photographs. You have to visit this museum to get in touch with the deepest cultural identity of the island, which is much more than the lively beach bars.

Everywhere you turn the friendliest felines will pose for you and steal the show.
The Majestic Apollon Theater
There is no doubt that Syros has a strong cultural heritage, with the Apollon Theater as one of its best examples. Built in 1864 by an Italian architect named Pietro Sambo, the construction of the theater was largely inspired by La Scala di Milano, among others. Home to the many cultural events, theatrical performances and operas of the island, the theater is definitely a visit worthy of Instagram.

Lazaretto
The quarantine hospital (Lazaretto) is a complex of abandoned stone buildings in the southern part of the port, in the Lazaretta area. Built in 1834, according to Weiler’s design, the Lazaretto was initially used as a quarantine space for visitors to the island in order to protect the native population from cholera outbreaks and other infectious diseases. From the late nineteenth century until the early postwar period, Lazaretto served first as a prison and then as an asylum for the mentally ill. During the Cretan Revolution of 1866, it served as a refuge for Cretan refugees.

Just behind the beach and towards its north end are the remains of a saline that was part of an industry many decades ago.
This long beach of thick, light-colored sand has bright turquoise waters and its natural beauty is such that it attracts many visitors, making it the second most popular beach in Naxos. Its unique color and environment are what makes some people think of Agios Prokopios as a giant pool.

Visit Portara
If you visit Naxos, a trip to Portara is necessary to enjoy the beautiful view and absorb the vibrant energy. Portara (the big door) is a name that residents have assigned to a wonderful marble door. This monument is a short walk from the port of the city of Naxos, proudly on a small island.
This drumstick landmark, which is 2,500 years old, marks a door that “leads nowhere” and was once a temple dedicated to the god Apollo. The temple was built when Lygdamis reigned, and Naxos was a prominent cultural center.
The vivacity of this monument is mainly due to the palpable spiritual energy around it, often described as “magical”, especially at sunset.

Just outside the town of Sangri, you will find the magnificent temple of Demetra, sitting proudly on a small hill.
This Naxian marble temple dates back to the 6th century and attracts many tourists looking to explore the island.

Visit Chora and The Castle
Chora Castle, a medieval monument, is another essential stop during your visit to Naxos. You can also visit the beautiful shops, cafes, restaurants, art spaces and surrounding museums and walk through the winding alleys.

Venetian Fortresses
During ancient times, the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea were surrounded by fortresses to protect themselves from pirates and foreign invaders. The same applies in the case of Naxos, since the architectural identity of the island includes a large number of Venetian fortresses. All the fortresses were built with Naxian stone, with sculptures on their surface, which shows that we are not only talking about a form of protection, but also important cultural monuments. The most famous fortresses of Naxos are the Glezos Tower in Chora Naxos, the Fragopoulos Tower in Kourochori and the Agia Tower next to the homonymous monastery.
